Part 2: mondo*dr awards Best Theatre shortlist

We can’t believe that the mondo*dr awards (hosted during Prolight + Sound Frankfurt) are this week! This year, Flightcase Warehouse is sponsoring the Best Theatre category to show our support for the creatives that drive forward entertainment technology innovation and to connect with the many international brands that can really benefit from specialist protective kit, created by a team of true experts.

Needless to say, we’re pretty excited and are really looking forward to presenting a worthy theatre winner with their well-earned trophy. In our most recent blog we introduced part 1 of the Best Theatre category nominees, and this week we shine a spotlight on the remaining spectacular entries. Read on to get the lowdown on who’s comprising the 2018 shortlist.

Yaoguang Pavilion Theatre – China

The Yaoguang Pavilion recently had a new play on its programme that came with special sound, lighting, staging and visual effects requirements. In order to work with the director’s vision and create a truly awe-inspiring theatrical spectacle, the venue needed to pull off a scene that emulated an approaching landing plane – and then accommodate a plane entering the stage itself. Not an easy feat. But with a series of Amadeus speakers combining DiGiCo, RME and Lab Gruppen technologies connected to a Reaper DAW, the Yaoguang Pavilion successfully emulated an accurate representation of an approaching propeller-powered plane. The Royal National Theatre – London

Situated on London’s Southbank overlooking Waterloo Bridge, the Royal National Theatre is a well-known British arts institution and one of the most prominent publically-funded venues of its kind. In a constant race to stage critically-acclaimed standout performances, in the last year the Royal National Theatre has overhauled its lighting provisions to brilliant effect. To do this, the theatre turned to White Light who provided 38 X4 Bar 20s – totally transforming the visuals and atmosphere that enhances performances. We’re also pleased to hear that the relationship between the Royal National Theatre and White Light was struck up at PLASA London, which we also exhibited at. Read more:

New Adelphi Theatre – Salford

Autograph and the University of Salford worked with the New Adelphi Theatre team to upgrade the site’s audio system with a future-proof solution. The nominated project features an audio system which is essentially 2 PAs in one, with a musical theatre end and vocal end firing through the PA. Controlled via a DiGiCo SD9 console and complemented with Stage Electrics lighting, the New Adelphi Theatre has cemented its reputation of being a versatile, high- powered professional performance space and educational institution. International Convention Centre Sydney – Sydney

This project from down under saw the meeting of many a creative mind and entertainment technology brands. The International Convention Centre Sydney required a new audio visual system which was in installed by Fredon technology and fulfilled by D&B systems. Since its AV revitalisation the venue has played host to some of the highest profile events in Australia, which have included a Bill Clinton keynote and the international launch of the Tesla luxury coupe. Atlas Theatre & Wildlands Zoo – Netherlands

Combining culture with nature, this fabulous zoo in the Netherlands has long been praised for its design and facilities (which make it one of the most popular attractions in the region). The zoo regularly stages events and seminars in its specialist theatre and provides a beautifully balanced sound thanks to a recently-installed b&b audiotechnik Y8 line array system and E-series outfills. Atlas Theatre & Wildlands Zoo also boasts dynamic and decorative lighting that enhances  both indoor and outdoor attractions, with colourful effects being generated by 170 Level Q7 IP LED par fixtures from Elation Professional. Park Theatre – Las Vegas

To match the outstanding design of this iconic Sin City entertainment venue, the team at the Park Theatre needed an audio system capable of handling some of the world’s most dynamic performances to heavy crowds. Their overhaul project sees a combination of L-R line arrays of L-Acoustics, K2 elements and K1-SB subwoofers on top of 12 L-Acoustics SB28 floor subwoofers, eight X8 loudspeakers, two X12 loudspeakers and much more. An extensive setup perfectly suited to one of Vegas’ largest capacity non-arena buildings. Read more here:

Finnish National Opera – Finland

This Nordic venue holds significant cultural value to Finns and is well-deserving of its mondo*dr awards nomination. A recent tech upgrade has seen the Finnish National Opera call upon DiGiCo, Outboard and d&b audiotechnik for spatial reinforcement in the form of a new and complex network of processors and relays that successfully enhance sound quality. The quality is said to be so good that audiences can expect to enjoy audio that actually matches the quality of what the performer on stage hears (all operator-free, allowing engineers to focus on the mix).
